Leo Brouwer Festival of Chamber Music was an important Cuban music festival held annually between 2009 and 2014. Throughout its 6 editions, it became one of the most prestigious cultural events in Cuba.
Emerged in 2009 as a tribute to the 70th birthday of the Master Brouwer, the Leo Brouwer Festival has always been focused on presenting repertoires and display unknown but very talented musicians selected to electrify ans surprise the audience. It is worth stating that never lacked artists as Paco de Lucía, Chucho Valdes, Fito Paez or Yo-yo Ma, among many others who were present at the Festival Leo Brouwer.
The celebration of differences
One of the most valued aspects of Leo Brouwer Festival, was his versatility. Because not only it included music; but also other art forms such as visual arts, photography, dance, literature and also humor. Even in music, the event was characterized by its wide fretboard of genres and performers.
Contrary to what its name suggests, hosted without regard to traditional music and contemporary. Genres from jazz to flamenco and fusion music, rumba and electronic music joined the chamber music at these events. His efforts also highlighted the inclusion of neglected or discriminated against in any way, such as Viola Gamba instruments; with the aim to change that perception in the public.
An end for the Leo Brouwer Festival?
On September 1st, 2014, the press conference where the details of the new edition of the Leo Brouwer Festival were going to be provided, took place in Havana. Held at the Hotel Melia Cohiba in Havana, the organizing committee also announced that in this sixth installment, that Leo Brouwer Festival was going to be the last one.
The Master Brouwer thanked the help received by several institutions, such as the Cuban Institute of Music and the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana, to overcome the difficulties that arose during the five years. But he felt it was time to take a break and pursue other projects. Despite statements by the great Cuban musician, a year later returned to show off their excellent organizing skills, announcing the most ambitious project undertaken by the Leo Brouwer office: Les Voix Humains Festival.
Bringing together more than 400 artists from 16 countries, the festival shared the intention of its predecessor: to achieve a perfect harmony of intelligent music, different artistic expressions and the balance between renowned artists and unknown talent. At the same time, two competitions organized within the Festival Les Voix Humains, resulted in two new events: the first will be the “Festival de Contratenores del Mundo” (World Countertenors Festival) to be held between September 30th and October 9th this year 2016.
The second will be a “Festival Habana a Capella” (Capella Havana Festival), scheduled for November 2017. In that same year, but in April, the Leo Brouwer office announced the celebration of “El Festival de Primavera” (Spring Festival). The Leo Brouwer Festival of Chamber Music was the forging of a series of festivals dedicated to give us unforgettable moments and music high bill. A gift that we appreciate all Cuban music lovers.
