Silvio Rodriguez Domínguez is the artist who was chosen in Cuba along with Ernesto Lecuona as the best Cuban composer of the 20th century and, along with Joan Manuel Serrat, as the best Spanish-American singer-songwriter of the second half of the century.
This interpreter, in the late 70’s, would have three albums: “Días y Flores” (Days and Flowers), 1975; “Al final de este viaje, la vida“, (At the end of this journey, life), 1978; And “Mujeres” (Women), from 1979. But from the 1980s this number would even increase considerably.
Along with his record production, the innovations of the Cuban singer-songwriter would also increase. The movement of the New Trova was searching deep in the musical roots of the Island. Its objective was to achieve a sonority that identified them.
The mixture of different genera in the new trova was more and more frequent. Uniting rumba, son, guaguancó with latin jazz, blues or with classical music, was not a rarity. In addition, song themes and metaphors were able to achieve high levels of complexity.
Many critics argue that the rejection of a sector of the public to these works is due to the culture that must be possessed to understand them.
The 80’s and the fame of Silvio Rodriguez
The fame of Silvio and his critical vision of the world would be shown in his next realizations. “Rabo de Nube”, of 1980, would count on the participation of the teacher Frank Fernandez, Anabell Lopez and Tita Parra.
“Unicornio”, of 1982, included the “Urgent song for Nicaragua”, in homage to the Sandinista Revolution. In 1984, he launched the “Triptych” with the collaboration of Anabell Lopez, Pancho Amat, Frank Fernandez, the Manguaré Group and Pablo Milanés.
In 1986, he recorded in Spain the double disc “Causes and Azares”. For 1988, already has available to the public another double album “Oh, melancolía!”.
During this time, the singer-songwriter made several international tours. He visited the stages of Argentina, Chile, Spain, among others. In each one of them shared his interpretations with famous artists like Antonio Tarragó Ros, Roy Brown or Chucho Valdés. As well as with groups like Irakere, Diákara or Afrocuba.
The musical news
The last decade of the century would bring much more activity in the musical career of Silvio Rodriguez. In 1992 appeared “Silvio“, first part of the trilogy that would be completed with “Rodriguez“, of 1994, and “Domínguez“, of 1996. Then, in 1998, would extend to a tetralogy with “Descartes“. In this tetralogy an acoustic sound is obtained, achieved by the almost exclusive use of the guitar and the double bass. In a few moments it is accompanied by percussion or electronic elements.
Currently, the musical production of Silvio does not cease. In 2002, he published his album “Expedición”. The following year, he launched “Appointment with Angels”. In 2006, he announced “Érase que se era”. In 2010, “Second appointment”, would be his last creation.
At the same time, Silvio Rodriguez never stopped visiting and playing in all the cities and events in which they wanted to listen. It even realized a community project that allows people from the most remote areas of the Island to know the Nueva Trova.
Silvio’s music is in the youth of today. His lyrics are not the pamphlet of an era, but are the feeling of a generation and a nation. No matter the political affiliation of the public, everyone feels the truth of the man behind the guitar.
